World History Syllabus

Course Description:

 This course covers a wide variety of topics that have impacted our world today.  We start with the early civilizations of the Old World and finish with recent world events in the early 21st century.  Students will be exposed to the cultural, economic, political, and military patterns that have shaped the world that it is today.   

 

What you will take with you from this class:

1. Events and/or human decisions dictate what is going to happen in their lifetime and beyond. (Chain Reaction)

2. Relate or connect with the emotions of history. (We will analyze people’s emotions and thoughts in reaction to events that happened in the past)

3. Make connections from the past to the present. (How did things, events, and people in the past relate to us today?)

4. Understand the cultural, economic, and political changes throughout the existence of civilization.

5. Enhance your skills in research, writing, reading, vocabulary, and presenting on topics that pertain to this course.

6. Developing your own conclusions, compare and contrast, and discuss several historical topics and how they relate to us today.

7. Within a group setting you will develop management skills, learn to work cooperatively, and understand responsibility for your part in the group.

 

Course has Eight Units:

Unit 1. Early civilizations of the Old World (3000 B.C. – 500 A.D.)

Unit 2. Eastern Europe, Middle East, North Africa, and East Asia during the Middle Ages 600-1500 A.D.

Unit 3. Middle Ages in Europe

Unit 4. European beginnings of globalization and the Americas 1400-1700.

Unit 5. Social, Political, and Economic Revolutions in Europe 1600-1900.

Unit 6. Globalization Part II: Industrial Revolution, Nationalism, and Imperialism 1700-1914.

Unit 7. Two World Wars 1914-1945.

Unit 8. World History in the past 60 years, 1945 – 21st Century.

 

Textbook:

            World History: Prentice Hall (2007)

Major Projects:

I.                     Early Civilizations Presentation

II.                   End of the Semester Presentation or Research Paper

III.                 3-4 Essays on various topics.

·         Projects are subject to change.

Assessments:

 Students are assessed by a variety of daily assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, presentations and discussions.

 

Tests, Quizzes, Class Assignments, and Participation:

Test and quizzes will make up the majority of your overall grade.  Tests range from 40-50pts and quizzes range from 10-15pts.  The semester final will be around 10% of your total grade.  There will also be various class assignments that range from 5-15pts.  Essays, presentations, and research papers range from 25 – 100pts.  Finally, participation in class is essential and you will be graded on the amount of participation.

 

Plagiarism:

Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Papers found to be plagiarized will be given a zero. Also, cheating of any kind will result in the loss of credit for the assignment or quiz/test.

 

 Late Work, Absences, and Extra Credit:

 Daily assignments, essays, and presentations must be handed in on time.   Daily assignments that are one day late will receive a maximum of 50%.  Essays, presentations, and any other assignment worth more than 40 pts will be penalized with a lost of 10-20 pts per day, depending upon the total points the assignment is worth.

 

A small amount of extra credit can be earned each quarter, if any student desires to earn extra credit.  Any further extra credit must be consulted with Mr. Rothenberger first.

 

Students who are absent have one day per day that they were absent to complete make-up work. So if you are gone two days, you have two days to make up the work.  Absences which are unexcused do not receive this opportunity.

 

The grade scale for World History 10 is as follows:

100 – 93%       A                     76 – 73%         C

92 – 90%         A-                    72 – 70%         C-

89 – 87%         B+                   69 – 67%         D+

86 – 83%         B                      66 – 63%         D

82 – 80%         B-                    62 – 60%         D-

79 – 77%         C+                   59% and below F
