Science Lab Regulations and Safety Contract

Science Lab Regulations and Safety Contract

I,  ____________   , agree that safety is the primary concern in any laboratory situation.  Each student has the privilege to participate in "hands-on" science investigations.  The basic safety rule is to use common sense and good judgment at all times.

The following list of regulations is mandatory and may include the addition of any instructions given by the teacher for specific activities.

1.  Use all equipment and materials as directed by the teacher and the experiment directions.

2.  Wear required safety equipment such as goggles, aprons, and gloves when appropriate.  When near any open flames, tie long hair back, roll up sleeves, and remove jackets and coats.

3.  Lab groups are responsible for keeping lab area clean and returning lab equipment to the appropriate location.  This includes keeping chairs pushed in and unnecessary materials out of lab areas.

4.  Follow directions for disposal of broken glassware and used chemicals.

5.  Students must report immediately to the teacher if they notice any unsafe conditions and behaviors;  such as broken equipment and materials, accidents, or spills.

6.  If any equipment is broken due to carelessness or misuse, students will be responsible for reimbursing the school for its replacement.

7.  No equipment is to be removed from the classroom because it is considered stealing.

8.  Horseplay will not be allowed.   This includes but is not limited to:  pushing, shoving, hitting, tripping, running, spitting, throwing objects, and splashing/squirting liquids.

9.  Students are encouraged to help one another, but any interference with another student's work will be considered a safety violation.  Students are expected to stay with their lab group in the assigned area and will not leave equipment and materials unattended.

10.  No food or drink is allowed in the classroom because lab tables and counters may be contaminated.

11.  When using live animals or other organisms, treat them with care and respect.

12.  Never start an experiment unless you have read and understand the instructions completely; if you have any questions, ask the teacher.
