Reading Skills 7
March 9 Finish compare and contrast assignment. We will review the requirements for the third novel. Students will be assigned to read an article from the Choices magazine. When they are done they will need to complete a fact versis opinion cube.
March 10 and 11 Students will use the "Choices" magazines and locate an article of interest and make a fact versis opinion cube.
March 12 Students will be taking a mid-year test.
March 13 This is reading Friday and students will read a novel of their choice.
March 2 and 3 Students will be engaged in lesson 10 of "Read Words in Context". Our focus in this lesson will be antonyms and the use of context clues. all work will be collected on Tuesday March 3
March 4 and 5 Students will work in partners reading two short stories called "Bear AttacK" and "Alligator Attack". Students are required to read out loud with their partners, complete the study guides with their partners, and complete a venn diagram with their partners. All work is due Monday March 9.
March 6 Students will be participating in the scheduled Reading Friday Activities.
Feb, 17 to Feb 20
Students will be watching the movie "Stand and Deliver" to compare and contrast the story in our "Bridges to Literature" textbook . A venn diagram due on 2/20/09.
Feb 9 - 13
Feb 9 Individual class time to work on assigned work associated with the students novel thaey are reading in class.
Feb 10 12 Students will fianlly get to the "Bridges in Literature" text and read the short story Jaime Escalante: Math Teacher. A comphrehensive review and reflection will be completed after we read the story. this is due in class on Feb 12
Feb 13 Students will continue with the reading and work assigned to the selection of their Reading Friday novels.
Feb 2 to Feb 6 Jan 26 to Jan 29 As a large group students will be engaged in a interactive game that requires listening and fluent reading. Two activities will follow in which will reinforce the importance of following directions. Activities will be due on Tuesday Jan 23 at the end of the period.
Jan 28 to Jan 29 Postponed due to time conflict! Students will read the short story "Jaime Escalante: Math Teacher "from our Bridges to Literature text. Our literaray focus will be cause and effects and authors purpose. Students will review Word Origins: Greek and Latin Roots. The final assessmnet will carry over on Feb. as we watch the movie Stand and Deliver students will compare and contrast the short story to the movie.
Jan . 30 Students will continue to read their selected novels for Reading Friday! A Student generated "Flip Chart" will be completed after they have finished reading the novel.
Jan 19 Students will finish the work associated with the short story Scary Jobs. We will finish the work and correct it in class today.
Jan 20 and 21 Students will be working on multiple meaning vocabulary words in Read Words in Context Lesson 8.
Jan 22 Students will continue to read in their selected novels. Work will be required upon the completion of reading this novel which will be around mid-quarter of 3rd quarter.
Jan 12 Students will finish the activities related to techincal reading. this work is due at the end of the period.
Jan 13 and Jan 14
Students will be reading from their "Bridges to Literature textbook the short story Trapped by Fear. After reading this selection students will be required to complete the compehensive study guide that will focus on the main idea and cause and effect.
Jan 15 and 16
Students will be reading from their selected novel.
Jan 5 and 6
Students will be engaged in activities that deal with technical reading. Lecture and classroom activities to follow. Work will be completed in class and due on Tuesday Jan 9
Jan 7 to Jan 8
Students will be engaged in a variety of group activities today and tommorrow dealing technical reading. Students will be placed in groups and will be required to collaboratively figure out how to play a variety of difficult board games.
Jan. 9
Reading Friday is when student will be reading novels of their choice. A novel flip chart will be completed by students after they have read their novel.
Dec. 19
Friday is designated for students to read the novel of their choice. When they have read the novel a Novel Flip Chart will be completed by each student.
Dec. 17 to Dec. 18
Students will read from "the Wild side" series the story "A Living Fossil as we continue to compare and contrat reading materials. A comphrehensive study guide will review the key points of the story and allow students much needed practice
Dec 15 to Dec 16
Our focus for the next two days will be compare and contrast along with author's point of view. Students will be reading from their "Bridges to Literature" textbook the short story "Good- bye Falcon". The comphehensive study guide will be completed in class and due Tuesday Dec. 16.
Dec. 8 to Dec 9
"Island of the Blue Dolphin" work is due today! Students will work on vocabulary acquisition with Lesson 4 of their vocab unit. Introduction, practice, and comphensive work will follow. This assignmwent is due on Dec. 11th
Dec. 10 to Dec 11
Students will read the short story "Lost in the Artic" out loud in class on Dec. 10. If time permits they will begin the required study guide that accompanys the story. On Thursday students will be required to compete a flip cart indicating the sequence of the story.
Dec. 12
Students will be selecting a novel from the classroom resources to read for their next Reading Friday Assignment. Students will select the novel of their choice, We will review the Novel Flip chart work requirements and students will beging to read their novel.
Dec. 1 to Dec. 5
Our focus this week will be to finish and bring closure to "Island of the Blue Dolphins" We have been waiting for the movie production of the novel and hope it arrives by this week! Students will complete their study guide and we will review the requirements of the Venn diagram in hopes to be watching the movie for the remainder of the week!
Alternative Plans: We will read from our "Bridges to Literature" resource "Typhoid Mary" and complete the accompaning study guide associated with the story.
Nov. 24 - Nov 26
7th grade students will finish the novel "Island of the Blue Dolphins." 1) Class discussion will follow, 2) completion of the requidred study guide, and 3) a poster will be completed!
Nov. 17 to 21
Nov 17 and Nov 18 Students will read from their "Bridges to Literature " textbook the short story Forty-Five Seconds Inside a Tornado. We will use a the KWL chart as a learning tool to better understand the story. The study guide will be completed in class and due on tuesday at the end of the period. A vocabulary test will follow the story.
Nov 19 and 20 Students will read the story "The Lion, the Hair, and the Hyeena" they will be required to review and identify the proper sequence of the story and answer comprhensive question after reading the story.
Nov. 21 Reading Friday! We should finish "Isalnd of the Blue Dolphin" in class today! Students are encouraged to keep up with the study guide that accompanies the story. We hope to compare and contrast the novel to the movie that has been made about "Isalnd of the Blue Dolphins"
Nov 10 to Nov 14
Nov 10 Students will recieve their final assessment on sequencing today.
Nov 11 to Nov 12 Students will continue with vocabulary lesson 3 Reading Words in Context. The required study guide will be due on Wednesday Nov 12th.
Nov. 13 Students will read the short story "Grizzly Tales" from the The Wild Side's Angry Animals source. The study guide will be due at the end of the period.
Nov 14 .Reading Friday where students continue to read independently in their novels.
Nov 4 to Nov 7
Nov. 4 and Nov. 6 Students will use sequencing guidelines to arrage items in the correct order. (Lecture, activities and individual and group work.)
Nov. 5 Students will continue their work on the computer program called "Readers Edge"
Nov. 7 On Reading Friday students will contin ue to read independently with their selected novels.
October 27 and 28 Students will continue with their vocabulary acquisition in "Reading Words in Context" Lesson 2
October 29 and 30 We are behind and need to readThe short story "from Elena" found in our Bridges to Literature textbook. Students will complete the study guide after reading the short story.
Reminder that students will be quizzed on the vocabularly of the story.
Oct 31 We will continue our group read the novel "Island of the Blue dolphins"

Oct 20 Our foucs today will be on Cause and Effect that will include lecture, activity, and indivudual studnt practice
Oct 21 to the 22 Students will be reading "From Elena" in our Bridges to Literature textbook. Students will be responsible for learning to spell ,as well as, the definitions of the vocabulary preview words in the story. The comprehensive study guide will be due first thing on Oct 23.
Oct. 23 to Oct 24 Students will continue with the story "Island of the Blue " Set aside times will be given for students to work on the conprehensive study guide for the story.
Oct 13 to 15
Oct. 13 We need to catch up with our second vocabulary lesson today with a focus of suffixes. Student work will be completed in class unless a student is absent.
Oct. 14 to the 15 Students will continue to read the novel "Island of the Blue Dolphins" completing the comprehsive study guide after they finishing reading each chapter.
Oct. 6 to Oct. 10
Oct. 6 Summarization will be our focus today so that students will be able to identify the elements in of a summary. Lecture format with student participation and reinforcement worksheets!
Oct. 7 Students will be practicing summarization skills by reading newspaper articles and following the steps in summarization covered in class on Monday.
Oct 8 Vocabulary unit continues with "Sufficicient Suffixes". Students will work on the suffixes er,or,ist, ness, ment, ion,ance, and ence.
Oct 9 -Oct 10 Students will continue to read their novel "The Blue Dolphin"
Oct 7 to Oct 8
Sept 29 Students will finish the study guide from the story selection" Did Anastasia Survive?"We will correct the work in class today.
Sept 30 - Oct 1 Students will read the short story "The Day the sun came Out" from our Bridges to Literature textbooks. They will be required to complete the reflecive study guide and take a vocabulary test on the new words found in the story.
Oct 2 Students will return to the computer lab to work on the "Readers Edge" program.
Oct. 3 Reading Friday...We will begin our second novel "Island of the Blue Dolphins" and Students will be3 responsible to complete the comprehensive study guide that accompanies this novel.
Sept. 22 to Sept 26
Sept 22 and 23
Students will read the short story "Did Anastasia Survive" and complete the Reading Comprehension study guide.
Sept 24
Students will continue to read the novel "The Water Witch" together in class and completing the accompaning study guide to the story. after each chapter that has been read in class.
Sept 25 and 26
We have finally made all of the proper connections to get started with the "Readers Edge" computerized program. Students will work independently on improving their speed and comprehension. Studnets will be required to print out their progress after each visit to the computer lab!
Sept 15 to Sept 17
Our focus in class this week will be the main idea. Lecture, activities, individual, and group work will be directed and monitored by the classroom teacher. Students will be quized on Wednesday.
Please look at their assigned Journal/Notes taking books for review!
Sept 18 and Sept 19
7th grade students will spend Thursday continueing to read "The Water Wtich"
and Friday working on the study guide/review sheet.
Sept. 8 to Sept. 9
Students will be engaged in reading a short story from their Bridges to Literature textbook called "Cinder Edna" A review/study guide will be assigned and completed during these two days of class.
Students will identify and review the behavioral expectations and course objectives for the year.
Sept.4 to Sept 5
Students will be pretesting to identify their ability level. Students have been encouraged to bring something to read when they have finished testing.
Feb 23 to Feb 27
Feb. 23 to Feb 26 This week our focus will be Facts versis Opinions. We will engage in activities, lecture, and practice dealing with Fact versis Opinion.
Feb 27 This is the last day that students may work on their assigned novel work. This work will be collected along with the novels at the end of the periods. Students completed with the work will be allowed to go to the media center to and select another book to read over the 9 week period.
