Reading Skills 8
March 16 Students will be taking their mid-quarter exam for the class.
March 17 to April 18 Students will read the short story "Another April" from their Bridges to Literature textbook. Students will be required to draw a sketch of the main sceen that include as many details as possible. Students will also be responsible to take a short test on the story after all work has been completed!
March 19 We will read another story in our Monsters Unit called "The Chupacabra: Bloodthirsty Beast" The study guide will be completed and graded the same day!
March 20 Reading Friday where students will read independently from a novel of their choice.
March 9 Students will continue with Lesson 20 of the vocabulary work. this is due today and a spelling test will be given towards the end of the class period.
March 20 to the 12 Students will work on Unit 2 Health of the World Works. Tuesday through Thursday students will read about Asprin : The Wonder Drug, Infectious Diseases: Bugs You Don't Want to Catch, and antrax: Rare but Deadly. After each short article they will answer the questions that follow the story. all work is due on thursday at the end of the period.
March 13 Reading Friday where students will read independently from a novel of their choice.
March 2 March 3 .
Students are watching the movie Enemy Lines and will compare and contrast it to the short story "Shot Down Behind Enemy Lines" in their Bridges to Literature textbooks. On Tuesday March 3 a a detailed venn diagram will be due.
March 4 and March 5 Students will be working on list 20 of their Mega Words multisyllabic words for reading, spelling and vocabulary. Our focus on this list will be words with er, or, ar, ard, and ward. Introduction activity and student work will be assigned.
March 6 Students will develop a list of requirements for the third Reading Friday novel and begin reading their individaully selected
Feb 23 Students will finish up the newspaper requirements for the novel Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiments. The newspaper assignment and the novels will be turned in at the end of the period today.
Feb. 24 to Feb 25 We will get back to our "Bridges to Literature" textbooks and read the short story "Shot Down Behind enemy Lines" where we will look for descriptive details while we visualize the story. Vocabulary will focus on prefixes and suffixes. the study guide from the story will be due at the end of the period on Wed. Feb 24.
Feb 25 Feb 26 Students will go to the media center to select the novel that they will be reading for the next nine weeks for Reading Friday!
Feb 7 to Feb 20
Students have been placed in groups to complete the required work of the Angel Experiments: Maximum Ride by James Patterson. Students are to complete a front page newspaper that will cover the seven specific requirements. This project will be worked on in class all week and ude on Feb. 23.
Feb 9 Students will continue with the assinged Lesson 19 Mega words assignment started in class last week in class.
Feb 10 to Feb 12Students will continue with topic of "Monsters" from the Jamestown Publishing series. Medusa from Greek mythology will be our focus. We will introduce our topic with a KWL activity, read the story, watch a clip from "Jason and the Argonaughts", and complete a comphrensive ref;ectis study guide. Work w ill be due on Feb 12
Feb 13 We will finish Maximun Ride in class today and finish with a group reflective writing piece.
Feb 3 to Feb 5 Students will be working with Megawords Lesson 19 focusing on unaccented words. (-ive, -ice, -ace, -,ine, - and -ain. The words will be introduced, practiced, and reviewed over the next three days of class. Reinfocement work will be due on thursday Feb 5.
Feb 6 The class will continue with Reading Fridays as we finish the book Maximum Ride : The Angel Experiments.
Jan 26 - Jan 29
Students will be engaged the critical analysis of ariticle credibility . Lecture, class discussion, and paired work will be completed by students. Assigned work is due Thursday at the end of the period.
Jan 30 Students will continue with the "Maximum Ride Story" by James Patterson. The assigned work for this novel will be due upon the completion of the novel.
Jan 19 Students will finish the work related to the short story "Trombones and Colleges". We will correct it in class towards the end of the period.
Jan 20 to 21 Students will be reading another short story in their "Monsters Series" called "Werewolves". We will read, process, and write on Tuesday and complete the comprhensive study guide on Wednesday. All work due on thursday Jan 22.
Jan 22 Students will continue with the Maximum ride story by James Patterson. The assigned work has been reviewed and covered in class. Students will begin this work after we have finished with the book.
Jan 16 Students will finish their first practice towards preparing for their MN Reading tests. All work will be due and turned in and the end of the class period.
Jan. 13 and 14.
Students will be reading from their "Bridges to Literature classroom textbook the short story called Trombones and Colleges. Students will be required to complete the comprehensive study guide which will focus on Making inferences. This work is due on Jan 14.
Jan 15 and 16
Students will continue to read from the novel "The Angel Experiments" by James Patterson Thursday and Friday of this week.
Jan. 5 and Jan 6
Students will finish the Unit One our "World Works" classroom resource dealing with "Police Sketch Artistis...The Art of fighting Crime" We will read the story togehter and complete the understaing what we read portion after.
Jan 7 and 8
Students will continue to read in our monsters unit "Werewolves" We will read the short story together and work on the comprehensive review which is due on Jan 8th.
Jan 9 We continue to read the Novel"Maximum Ride" by James Patterson via a cd read. Students are very engaged in the story..a final project will be assigned at the end of the book read.
Dec. 15 to the 16
We are behind and will attempt to begin and finish Mega Words Lesson 18. A reminder to parents that all work is completed in class. No home work is assigned unless the student is absent.
Dec. 17 to the 18
Our focus skills will be chronological order and reading for details useing our "Bridges to Literature" resources. Students will be reading the shodrt story "Roberto Clemente: Hero and Friend" A reinfrocement study guide will follow the story.
Dec. 19
The class will continue to read and listen to "The Angel Experiment" by James Patterson
Dec. 8th
Students will read the short story "King Kong" and complete the Reading Comphrension work that accompanys the story. this is due at the end of the period today.
Dec 9 to Dec 11
Students will continue with vocabulary acquisition working with Mega's words Lesson 18. the vocabulary words will be introduced and practiced through out the two day period. Students will be required to complet a 6-trait writting assignment useing the words from this lesson.. all work is due on Thursday Dec. 11th
Dec. 12
We will begin our group audio book read today on James Patterson's . Students will be given the required work for the story which will be due upon completion of this book read.
Dec. 1 - Dec 3
Students will be engaged in a review of Compare and Contrast. As individuals they will read two articles about extreme (cold) outdoor situations and answer the questions from each article. As partners they will compare their answers to each article and then complete a venn diagram comparing and contrasting the two short stories. this assignment will be corrected and truned in on Wed. Dec. 3
Dec. 4 and 5
For two days the class will focus on the short story "Cesar Chavez: Civil-Rights Champion" We will read the short story together in class from our "Bridges to Literature" (our classroom resource. ) Students will answer the the accompaning study guide. the study guide and a spelling test will be due and corrected ibn class on /Thursday in class.
Dec. 5
This is the last day that students will be reading and/or working on the novel work requirements that will be due on Monday Dec. 8
Nov 24 to Nov26
These three days will give 8th grade students the opportunity to catch up on the required Cyber Crimes work and reading plus completing the novel and work that will be due at mid term (Dec 8th).
Nov. 17 to Nov 21
Nov. 17 and Nov 18 Students will continue to work from the resource World Works. We will focus on Lesson 2 Cybercrime..criminals on the internet. We will read the short story and answer the comphrehensive study guide due on Nov 18
Nov. 19 Hopefully,, A guest speaker on Cybercrime. Students will have the opportunity to compare and contrast information from the article to current practices!
Nov. 20 and Nov 21. Students will be reading their novels and working on the required work which sill be due at mid quarter time which will be around the first week in Dec.
Nov 10 to Nov 14
Nov. 10 to Nov 11 Students will continue to read from their "Bridges to Literature" textbook the short story "Wima Mankiller" The comprehensive study guide will be due at the end of the period on Tuesday Nov. 11.
Nov. 12 and 13 Stdents will begin work on Mega Words Lesson #17. Work will be due Friday Nov. 14
Nov. 14 Reading Friday where students read independently on novel they have selected. At Mid quarter students will be presenting their final work on the novels.
Nov. 4 to Nov 7
Nov 4 and Nov 6 Students will be working with the "Scholastic's Choices" November/December publication. Requirements will involve 1) reading four of the main articles, 2) writting a review for each article and 3) developing four test question w/ the answers for each article and 4) students will be taking a final test on the student deoped test.
Nov. 5 We will be continueing our independent work with "Readers Edge" in Computer Lab A
Nov 7 Reading Friday where students read independently with a novel of their choice and complete the work assigned to the novel.October 27 to 31
October 27 Students will finish their asssigned work on Homophones.
Oct 28 to Oct 30 Students will become familiar with a new classroom resource called "World Works" by the Jamestown Educations Publishers. Our first unit topic will include short stories about Law Enforcement. Students will read silently the short stories and complete the comprehensive making connections that accompany the stories. Students will also be responsible for the vocabulary words that are reinforced throughout the story.
Oct 31 Reading Friday...students will read their novelsduring the class period.
Oct 20 to 24
Oct. 20 Students will have the period to complete the requirements for "How Angel Peterson Got His Name" This work is due at the end of the period today!
Oct 21 to Oct 22 Students will review the importance of sequence and how a paragraph maybe ordered. Studentw ill be assigned a writning assigmentto tell me directions on how to do something. Students must put them into the right sequence and write at least 8 lines of complete sentences! This assignment is due at the end of the day on Oct 22.
Oct. 23 Students will be tested on sequence by reading several short passages and answer the questions that accompany the stories. Go over the requirements for the individual novel reads beginning this Friday.
Oct 24 We will be traveling to the media center today to select individual novels for each student to read on Fridays in class.

Oct 13 to the 14 Students will be required to read the nonfiction selection "A Slave" from their Bridges to Literature textbook. Students will be required to complete tyhe comprehensive study guide for the story.
Oct. 15 We will finish the novel "How Angle Peterson Got His Name"

Oct. 6 Students will finish the Article Read Activity which was assigned on 10/1/08
Oct 9 to Oct 10 Students will begin and complete Lesson 16 Mega Words(Multisyllabic words, for Reading, spelling, and vocabulary.
Oct 11 Students will be working with the Readers Edge Program in the computer Lab today!
Oct 12 Friday is Reading Friday and we will continue with our groups readings of "How Angel Peterson Got His Name"
Sept. 29 to Oct 3
Sept 29 and Sept. 30
Students will be engaged in reading the short story "The No-Guitar-Blues" from their text Bridges to Literature. Our focus will be to understand the role of "cause and effect". Students will read the short story, complete reinforcement study guide, and take a vocabulary test on the new words from the story.

Two students will be required to read a and the critical thinking worksheets that accompany these two stories. Note...this assignment will run into next week!

*8th grade students will continue their progress on the coumputer program "Readers Edge"

The class will continue to read together "How Angel Peterson Got His Name" by Gary Paulson.
Sept. 22
Students will finish Lesson 15 in the Mega Words vocabulary packets which is due today!
Sept 23 - Sept 24
Students will be working on the reading assignment using the October Choices issue. This assignment is due at the end of the period of Tuesday Sept. 23
Sept 23
After attendance students will report to Computer Lab C where they will be engaged with the program Readers Edge. Students will be working on their individual speed and accurracy while reading.
Sept. 15 and Sept. 16
Students are finishing up a comparrison and contrast from the modern fairy tale "Cinderella"
Students have been instructed to write a four paragraph paper that includes the following: 4 paragraphs, introduction, how are these two modern day fairy tales the same, how are these modern day fairy tales different, and a closing paragraph. Work will be graded folling the two components of the six trait writting requirements 1)orgainzation, and 2) word choice. A rough draft is required and a final draft which can be word processed but not required!
Sept 17 and 18
Students will pick up on Lesson 15 in the vocabulary acquisition with a program called Mega Words. We will practice today and tommorrow!
Sept 19
Mega Words Quiz and begin Gary Paulsons short novel "How Angle Peterson "
Sept. 8 and Sept 9
Students will be engaged in reading a short story from Bridges to Literature textbooks called "Baseball Saved Us" We will read the story outloud in clasws and floow through with the reinforcement packet/study guide completing all work in class.
Sept 10 and Sept 11
Students will become familiar with the reading program "Readers Edge" this is a computerize program that will focus on the improvement of individual speed and comprehension. At the end of each use students will track thier scores and keep a record of their work. A weekly print out will be given to the instructor for that weeks work.
Sept 13.
Every Friday will be reading Friday. The first quarter we will be reading a short novel by Gary Paulson called "How Angel Peterson Got His Name". This novel will be read as a class/group effort with required work assigned for each novel that we read during each quarter.
Sept. 2 and 3
will identify and review the behavorial expectations and course objectives for the class.
Sept 3 to Sept 4
Students will be pretesting to identify their level of reading abilities. Students are encouraged to bring reading to class upon completting the testing sections early.
