Mr. Haugh
Hello, I'm Dave Haugh and I am the band director for grades 8-12, as well as half of the 7th grade lessons. I graduated from Mankato East High School, the University of St. Thomas with a business degree, and Mankato State University with a music education degree and masters in music education. I taught for twelve years at NRHEG High School in New Richland. Prior to teaching, I was a member of the Madison (WI) Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps, the Govenaires Senior Drum & Bugle Corps, and on staff with the Mankato '77 Lancers Marching Band.
My wife Michel & I live in Mankato with our daughter Milena, cat and two dogs. In my free time I play slowpitch softball in the summer and downhill ski in the winter.
The band website is up & running. Parents and band members please register, so you can receive newsletters and news updates.

3rd Quarter Requirements: 2011-2012
7th Grade Lesson requirements will be established by Mrs. Shoemaker.
8th Grade Lesson Requirements: band members need to get 7 lessons in during the quarter. Each lesson is worth a maximum of 100 pts, based on how prepared the student is. Unprepared lessons are worth 75 pts provided some progress is made in the lesson.
3 of those lessons need to be done by midquarter (Feb. 22). After Feb. 22 those lessons can be made up for a maximum of 60 pts. Students may also do a concert write-up for 60 pts, but no more than two times per quarter. Concert write-ups can be used as extra credit if he/she gets all lessons in, but points will only be added to nor more than two of his/her lowest scores (as opposed to 60 points spread out over all lessons).
8th graders in Jazz 2, which meets on Fridays before school this quarter will be awarded bonus lessons based on their timely attendance & participation in this. Depending on how many practices we have, this could mean 2 to 3 lesson credits. (full points for those regularly on time to the 7:25am practices).
New this quarter - students who get all of their lessons done prior to the last week of the quarter (by March 16) will have their lowest score raised to 100. In addition, if they get those all done without having to come more than once in any week, I will raise their two lowest scores to 100.
Students have an assigned time each week, and can come in a maximum of two times per week if need be. They cannot come in more than once in a day, however. Finally, students are encouraged to use the practice rooms whenever possible, especially if practicing at home is not always possible. I will provide passes when requested for that.
Grades 9-12: requirements vary depending on the student, so please read carefully:
JAZZ ENSEMBLE 1: members will not need to do any lessons this quarter unless they miss too many practices or are late to too many practices. Periodic lateness or unexcused absences of any number will lower the 'lesson' grades in the gradebook. Members also must be able to attend the Lamberton Jazz Festival March 27 and Solo & Ensemble April 4th (both at the beginning of 4th quarter). Those high schoolers in JAZZ 2 have the same requirements, except that they will not be performing at the two dates listed above.
SOLO & ENSEMBLE/ALL STATE AUDITIONS: while the contest itself isn't during 3rd quarter, (it's April 4th at GAC), students who register to perform will only need to come in at least once to work on their piece with Mr. Haugh. They are recommended to come in as often as needed, however. Students trying out March 14 for All State also should come in a minimum of one time & will have no other requirements other than being ready for the audition. Readiness for either will be determined by Mr. Haugh, as no student will be allowed to perform unless he or she has adequately prepared.
PASSING MUSIC: band members not in Jazz 1 or 2, and are not preparing a solo or ensemble will be assigned music that must be passed by early March - for most this will be parts of our contest music, which needs to be done before Large Group contest on March 7th, for others it may be music we're performing March 10 (Concert Band) or March 15 (Varsity Band).
For everyone in HS, one lesson grade will be submitted based on your overall requirements
Attendance/Participation: this part of the grade is based on classroom participation, attitude, readiness, and ability to follow directions. Excessive tardiness, disrespectful behavior and a lack of active participation will affect the grade. Attendance at concerts, contest, etc... is required as well.
