English 9 Reading and Video Information
The following information is provided to inform you about the reading selections and videos used in English 9.
Mythology by Edith Hamilton: This book is used to provide background information about mythology. Students will read a wide variety of stories, including Hercules, The Quest for the Golden Fleece, The Odyssey, and The Trojan War and become familiar with the Greek names of mythology figures. Various activities are assigned during this unit. Videos are used with some of the stories.
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare: Students will read the play out loud in class and begin to understand how the language of Shakespeare’s time differs from our language today. Students will watch two versions of this play. Writing activities are used.
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck: This is a heartwarming story of two men looking for work during the Depression. Trouble follows them everywhere, and they have a hard time keeping a job. Some situations require sensitivity from the reader. This book has profanity, but the profanity reflects the frustrating situations of the men. A video is used with this book.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding: This is a powerful book about a group of young school boys who get stranded on a deserted island. Students will watch as the boys struggle to keep themselves civilized. A video is used with this book.
A wide variety of short stories will be read from our textbook. These selections will be the basis for writing assignments and other activities as assigned.
