Course Syllabus

NAME OF COURSE: Art I

GRADE LEVEL(S): 9‑12

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Art I is based on a study of styles and artists, past and present (i.e. Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, Op art and Symbolism). Through this study, the student will be developing an awareness of the limitations and flexibilities of a variety of media. Drawing with pencils, chalk, and pastels, tempra, and acrylics; clay work, sculpture, fibers, and printmaking are among the media that will be experienced throughout this course.

*PREREQUISTE TO ALL OTHER ART CLASSES

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. Students will develop understanding of linear and atmospheric perspective and shading techniques.

2. Students will be able to describe the characteristics of Pop Art.

3. To learn a variety of techniques used by commercial artists.

4. Students will be able to describe the characteristics of Op Art and Color Field painting and be able to give examples of three artists.

5. Students will be able to describe Bas Relief and be able to list the important factors in constructing any clay piece.

6. Students will create recognizable self‑images and a symbolic background in the symbolism styles of Frida Khalo.

7. Students will develop an understanding of the principles of design and how they are utilized in composition.

8. Students will demonstrate understanding the basic principles of weaving using five or more techniques.
