Requirements for note taking

Notebooks that do not follow this format will receive a lower grade.

  1. Start each day on a new page.
  2. Put the date at the top of the page in the upper corner.
  3. Leave a margin of approximately 1.5 to 2 inches along the left side of the page.  A line can be drawn as a guide.  This space will be used for questions and summaries
  4. Use headings to keep organization clear.
  5. Indent to separate related pieces of information
  6. When writing definitions, write the word in capitals, underline or make a box around the word so that it stands out.
  7. Make diagrams large enough to be easy to read and leave at least two lines above or below the diagram to allow for additional notes or corrections.
  8. When possible, use color in your notes and diagrams to make them easier to read.
  9. Each evening, review your notes to make sure that they are clear and you understand them.  Write any questions that you have in the left margin so that they can be answered in class the next day.
  10. When you are absent, you are expected to get notes from a friend or you partner for the days that you missed. These notes are to be copied in your notebook in the appropriate place.  If you do not have time to copy them in prior to your return to class, leave the appropriate number of pages blank and copy the notes in later but prior to the next test.
