North PE classes take part in golf unit
North Elementary's physical education department has been trying to increase the amount of lifelong physical activities they provide to our students. Physical education teachers at North are Bill Stuewe and Kirsten Guentzel.
"In contacting Golf Professional Jason Harrell from Shoreland Country Club and the Minnesota PGA, we were able to provide North students with a free golf lesson at the Community Center," Guentzel said. "The Minnesota PGA provided indoor SNAG golf equipment to make this possible.
"The Minnesota PGA Golf License Plate Grant for schools is also a way for schools access funding to make these events possible in schools. We submitted the grant last month. If our grant is approved by the Minnesota PGA, we would be able to keep the SNAG golf equipment. Until then, Jason has been very supportive in offering his time and instruction to our students."
Students were taught the basics in putting and chipping. They also had the chance to participate in some games, including chipping the ball into a large, inflatable hippo.
Other volunteers who have helped with instruction included retired P.E. teacher Nancy Hanson and Golf Professional Jerry Carpenter from Le Sueur Country Club.
