Themes & Units
The units/themes used physical education are carefully developed and chosen to promote children's enjoyment and participation of moderate to vigorous physical activity, fitness development and social learning. The units/themes are developmental (meaning the first grade units build off of the kindergarten units, etc.) and if a child has not achieved a skill at the designated grade level, he/she will be afforded an opportunity and guidance to work on and accomplish it at the next grade level.
Unit: Chasing, Fleeing and Dodging
Skills Taught: Traveling around stationary obstacles without touching them. Fleeing from a partner. Dodging stationary objects. Creating spaces for self. Moving safely through space.
Unit: Dribbling and Kicking with the Feet
Skills Taught: Moving a ball forward, backward & side wards with the feet. Stopping a ball with the feet. Kicking a stationary ball.
Unit: Dribbling and Passing with the Hands
Skills Taught: Bouncing and catching a ball with 2 hands. Bouncing and catching a ball while slowly traveling forward.
Unit: Fitness Concepts and Development
Skills Taught: Getting the heart to beat fast. Supporting body weight in weight bearing/strengthing positions. Developing muscular strength & endurance.
Unit: Jumping and Landing
Skills Taught: Jumping using a 2 foot to 2 foot landing. Jumping from 1 foot to a 2 foot landing.
Unit: Locomotor & Nonlocomotor Skills
Skills Taught: Walking, hopping, skipping, jumping, running, galloping, sliding, rocking.
Bending, curling, rising, sinking, twisting, stretching, turning, hanging, spinning, balancing.
Unit: Low Organized Games
Skills Taught: Following rules, taking turns, moving without colliding with others.
Unit: Movement Concepts
Skills Taught: Finding and maintaining self-space while traveling in general space. Fast and slow movements with various body parts. Changing from one body shape to another. Identifying and using a variety of relationships to objects and others (in front of, behind, over/under, etc.)
Unit: Rhythms and Dance
Skills Taught: Marching to a rhythmical beat. Moving to an uneven rhythmical beat.
Unit: Roller Skating
Skills Taught: T-stand, stopping, skating forward, safe falling techniques.
Unit: Space: Where the Body Moves
Skills Taught: Moving in different directions (forward, backward, up, down, etc.), at different levels (low/deep, medium, high), on different pathways (straight, curved, zigzag, twisted) and in different areas (general vs. personal space)
Unit: Sportsmanship
Skills Taught: Shaking hands at the end of a game. Using respectful language. Working/playing with all students. Helping others.
Unit: Striking and Volleying
Skills Taught: Pushing or hitting a balloon forward with the hands. Striking a balloon upwards with a variety of body parts at different levels. Using paddles/rackets to strike a balloon/ball.
Unit: Striking with Long-Handled Implements
Skills Taught: Hitting a ball off a T, using a bat. Moving a ball/puck with a stick.
Unit: Throwing and Catching
Skills Taught: Underhand throwing. Catching a self-tossed ball. Catching a ball from a bounce.
Unit: Weight Transfer and Balance/ Gymnastics
Skills Taught: Rolling - forwards, side wards. Balancing - on different bases of support, static balance. Controlling weight while hanging & supporting self. Transferring weight from one body part to another.
          
Unit: Aerobic Games
Skills Taught: Following rules of the game. Keeping heart beating at training level for increasing lengths of time.
Unit: Chasing, Fleeing and Dodging
Skills Taught: Traveling and changing directions quickly. Safely changing from one speed to another. Quickly fleeing from a partner. Moving in general space without colliding with others. Moving to an open space.
Unit: Dribbling and Kicking with the Feet
Skills Taught: Dribbling/kicking with different parts of the feet. Kicking a rolling ball. Running up to and kicking a stationary ball.
Unit: Dribbling and Passing with the Hands
Skills Taught: Dribbling in self-space with one, then the other hand. Dribbling in self-space while alternating hands. Dribbling while moving.
Unit: Fitness Development and Testing
Skills Taught: Components of fitness. How to perform each of the fitness tests (curl-ups, push-ups, sit & reach, mile run, shuttle run). Keeping the heart beating for increased lengths of time. Performing exercises to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility.
Unit: Jumping and Landing
Skills Taught: Jumping a swinging rope using single & double bounces. Correctly turning a short jump rope. Running and jumping taking and landing with 1 and 2 feet.
Unit: Nutrition
Skills Taught: Eating from all the color groups. Which foods you should eat a lot of and which you should eat only a little of. How food provided energy for your body.
Unit: Movement Concepts
Skills Taught: Actions of the body (supporting body weight, lead action, applying & receiving force), locomotor and nonlocomotor skills. Moving in different directions, levels & pathways. The effort of the body (accelerating/decelerating, sudden/sustained movements, light/strong force, relaxed/tense movements). Relationships occurring in movement (with body parts, individuals/groups, with apparatus & equipment)
Unit: Rhythms and Dance
Skills Taught: Manipulating an object to a rhythmical beat. Traveling to a rhythmical beat using a even and uneven beat. Following steps to basic folk dances.
Unit: Roller Skating
Skills Taught: T-stand and T-stop. Skating forwards. Safe falling techniques. Skating around obstacles without running into them.
Unit: Sportsmanship
Skills Taught: Shaking hands at the end of a game. Using respectful language. Working/playing with all students. Helping others. Using words of encouragement. Taking turns. Being considerate of others while taking out, using and putting away equipment.
Unit: Striking and Volleying
Skills Taught: Striking balloons/balls with different body parts in self-space. Continuously striking a balloon/ball. Using different amounts of force while striking.
Unit: Striking with Long-Handled Implements
Skills Taught: Safely carrying a stick while moving in general space. Passing a ball/puck to a stationary target. Striking a ball off a T.
Unit: Striking with Short-Handled Implements
Skills Taught: Striking a bouncing ball with a paddle/racket. Using different amounts of force while striking objects with paddles/rackets.
Unit: Throwing and Catching
Skills Taught: Throwing to a target using an underhand motion. Throwing a variety of objects using an overhand motion. Catch a self-thrown ball at different levels.
Unit: Weight Transfer and Balance/ Gymnastics
Skills Taught: Rolling forwards and side ways. Balancing on different bases of support on low equipment. Transferring weight from one set of body parts to another in a variety of ways. Supporting weight on different equipment.
Unit: Aerobic Games
Skills Taught: Following rules of the game. Using sustained movement to keep the heart beating in the training zone.
Unit: Chasing, Fleeing and Dodging
Skills Taught: Changing from a leading to a following position. Purposefully keeping out of others' self space while traveling. Moving to an open space. Maintaining self space while traveling in general space.
Unit: Dribbling and Kicking with the Feet
Skills Taught: Dribbling with the feet at different speeds. Changing directions while dribbling. Kicking with accuracy to a partner. Kicking with different degrees of force.
Unit: Dribbling and Passing with the Hands
Skills Taught: Dribbling in self-space at different levels. Dribbling while traveling in different directions. Dribbling with control while traveling.
Unit: Fitness Concepts, Development and Testing
Skills Taught: Components of fitness. How to perform each of the fitness tests (curl-ups, push-ups, sit & reach, mile run, shuttle run). Keeping the heart beating for increased lengths of time. Performing exercises to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. Beginning to plan to improve fitness levels.
Unit: Jumping and Landing
Skills Taught: Jumping a self-turned rope forward and backward. Jumping a overhead turning long rope.
Unit: Movement Concepts

Skills Taught: Eating from all the color groups. Identifying fruits and vegetables. Choosing which foods you should eat a lot, or a little of. Making wise food choices.
Unit: Rhythms and Dance
Skills Taught: Following simple sequences that combine locomotor and body movements. Moving to music using different body shapes. Using a rhythmic sequence using jump bands.
Unit: Roller Skating
Skills Taught: T-stop and T-stand. Skating forward with control. Skating backwards for a short distance. Skating forward while lowering the body into a squat position.
Unit: Sportsmanship
Skills Taught: Identifying the elements of sportsmanship. Developing a sensitivity to the feelings of other classmates/players. Working/playing in a diverse group without interfering with others. Using sportsmanlike words and actions before, during, and after an activity.
Unit: Striking and Volleying
Skills Taught: Underhand striking a ball upward with the hand/arm. Volleying a balloon/ball back and forth to a partner using different body parts.
Unit: Striking with Long-Handled Implements
Skills Taught: Dribbling a ball/puck with control, stopping on a signal. Passing a ball/puck to a stationary target. Striking a ball with a bat either with or without using a T.
Unit: Striking with Short-Handled Implements
Skills Taught: Bouncing and striking a small object with a paddle/racket. Striking a ball upwards with a paddle/racket.
Unit: Throwing and Catching
Skills Taught: Underhand throwing a ball to a partner. Throwing for distance using an overhand motion. Catching a ball thrown to different levels.
Unit: Weight Transfer and Balance/ Gymnastics
Skills Taught: Rolling in any direction after landing. Transferring weight from feet to hands to feet in the inverted position. Transferring weight by traveling into a spring take-off.
