Grad Portrait

The mission of Saint Peter Public Schools is to inspire a passion for learning that enables all individuals to reach their highest potential. For this to happen for all students, our PreK-12 system must consistently ask โ€œWhat do our kids need to know and be able to do in todayโ€™s world?โ€ and โ€œHow do our schools support these expectations?โ€

The Graduate Portrait was developed in collaboration with Saint Peter community members as our answer to the first question and as our definition of what it means to be career, college and life ready.

An important component of this work is regular and ongoing communication with the community about our progress, challenges and results. Our Community Action Team, made up of a diverse range of Saint Peter partners, helps us consider new ideas and keeps us accountable to the vision of developing college, career and life readiness skills in all students. Content Mastery

Graduate will demonstrate mastery of content knowledge, having built connections between previously mastered content and new learning.

Well-Being and Resilience

Graduate will demonstrate proficiency in the ability to:

  • Seek and accept new and difficult challenges to adapt to change
  • Persist to accomplish difficult tasks and to overcome personal barriers to meet goals
  • Establish specific goals with intended outcomes and time frames for completion
  • Demonstrate understanding and belief of self to engage in reflection for individual improvement and advocacy

Civic Mindedness

Graduate will demonstrate proficiency in the ability to:

  • Consider local, national and world issues with an understanding of diverse perspectives
  • Contribute to solutions that benefit the broader community
  • Understand the foundations of our country and value our rights, privileges and responsibilities
  • Act with awareness beyond oneself; understand individual actions have broader benefits and consequence

Creativity and Innovation

Graduate will demonstrate proficiency in the ability to:

  • Engage in problem solving and design thinking to create innovative solutions to overcome obstacles
  • Evaluate and synthesize information from multiple sources to strengthen comprehension and deepen awareness
  • Use a wide range of creation technologies (such as brainstorming, divergent and convergent thinking)
  • Elaborate, refine, analyze and evaluate their own ideas in order to improve and maximize creative efforts
  • Demonstrate originality and inventiveness and understand real world limits to adopting new ideas
  • View failure as an opportunity to learn; understand innovation is a long-term, cyclical process of small successes and frequent mistakes
  • Act on creative ideas to make a tangible and useful contribution to the field in which the innovation will occur

Critical Thinking-Problem Solving

Graduate will demonstrate proficiency in the ability to:

  • Identify and solve problems through creative thinking
  • Raise vital questions driven by curiosity and answer them
  • Collect, assess and analyze, synthesize relevant information
  • Make sound decisions based on evidence and reasoning
  • Reflect critically on learning experiences, processes and solutions


Graduate will demonstrate proficiency in the ability to:

  • Listen effectively for a variety of purposes to decipher meaning including knowledge, values, attributes and intentions
  • Understand and offer alternate points of view
  • Incorporate effective writing skills for various purposes and audiences to convey understanding and concepts
  • Use technological skills, contemporary digital tools and multiple medias to explore and exchange ideas
  • Articulate thoughts and ideas effectively using oral, written, and nonverbal communication skills in a variety of forms, contexts, and diverse environments (including multi-lingual)
  • Use communication for a range of purposes (i.e. to inform, instruct, motivate and persuade)


Graduate will demonstrate proficiency in the ability to:

  • Work effectively, interdependently and respectfully with diverse teams for sustained periods of time to develop high-quality products and achieve common goals
