   New SPHS athletic trainer Leah Rutz

There is a new face assisting Saint Peter High School student-athletes this school year as Leah Rutz has taken over as the Saints’ new athletic trainer. Rutz takes over from Megan Kinser, who has moved on to take a new position in the Twin Cities area.

Leah had time recently to respond to some questions about her new role here at SPHS and the following are her responses for this Q&A:

Hometown: Mokena, Illinois

College: Recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

Certifications/achievements (for your profession): NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer; Wisconsin and Minnesota Athletic Trainer Licensed; and Emergency Medical Responder.

Previous athletic training experience:  During college I completed a six-month rotation at Marshfield High School in Marshfield, WI; I worked at the International Gymnastics Camp for a summer in Stroudsburg, PA; and I was the health supervisor at Camp Juniper Knoll in East Troy, WI

Reasons for getting into athletic training: I sustained a knee injury while I was in high school and I went in to see my Athletic Trainers. I went in for that injury and left with a new passion. I went back almost every day for four years to help out and learn as much as I could and I just fell in love with athletic training. I am not the biggest fan of sports but I love getting to help my athletes get back to the sport they love. Seeing them back on the field/court/ice/equipment after an orthopedic set back is the most rewarding feeling in my career. 

Thoughts about working with the Saint Peter High School sports programs:  I am excited to work with the variety of sports offered at St. Peter and to experience a whole new world here in Minnesota. 

Goals for your time here at SPHS: To get to know as many students as possible during my time. They are the reason I do what I do!!

Other thoughts about your new position here at SPHS: I am neither a Bears nor Packer fan, don’t worry! Although, I am a Blackhawks fan born and raised. I also work with Gustavus Adolphus College and their Athletic Training Program as a Clinical Preceptor to their students, so you may see them around from time to time!

St. Peter has changed registration software for the 2019-2020 school year. We are no longer using the rSchool Registration software and are now using Affinety. This means you will need to create a new account. You will create an account that links to your student’s Infinite Campus information which will help with contact and eligibility information on the activities office and coaching end of the software. I understand this is an inconvenience so thank you for your patience with this new process. If you have questions with setting up the Family Account, please call Affinety directly here: 1.800.934.2621. Please read this entire email before starting the registration process from the link below.

You will need your student’s Infinite Campus Student ID number located on their Infinite Campus student page. 

If parents have not set up a Parent Portal Account - they will need to contact Kathy Wobbrock to set that up. Her email is below.

If parents do not remember their login information - they will need to contact Kathy, so she can reset the log in information.

Click on Today (left gray colored column)

Student information will appear in a box and that is where the Student Number will be located.

If there are multiple students in the family that parents are looking for the number, they will need to click on the down arrow in the upper right corner and choose the student that they are looking for.

If you do not have an Infinite Campus Login (this is how you access your student’s grades, etc.) you will need to reach out to Kathy Wobbrock at Do not reach out to Kathy unless you need to set up your parent portal account or need to reset that password. All other inquiries should be directed to the activities office or the phone number above.

There is a helpful hint sheet attached to this email as well as found on the registration site. Please follow those instructions closely before reaching out to the Activities Office.

For students requesting a Scholarship, you will need to fill out the Scholarship Form on the Links Tab and you should also fill out a Free and Reduced Lunch Application for the district office. You need to complete a Free and Reduced application every year. There is a special tab on the registration site that reads “Scholarship Request - Activities” and “Scholarship Request - Fall Sports”. Activities are all non-sport activities such as the Fall Play, Mock Trial, Math Team, etc.

Sports start on Monday, Aug. 12 except for 7th and 8th football which will start on Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Plan on attending the Fall Parent-Athlete-Coach meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, SPHS Performing Arts Center. We will also have our fall sports meetings at that time.

If you are new to St. Peter starting in 10th grade or later, you will need to fill out a Transfer Form on the Links tab on the site.

The Work Skills Competition, presented by the Mankato Area CTIC, is an annual event for High School students to showcase their application, interviewing and problem solving skills. This year's competition was held at South Central College and had over a 150 students registered from 10 area school districts.

Students, including several from Saint Peter High School, compete in four areas: Problem Solving, General Workplace Knowledge, Applications, and Interviewing where they are judged by over 40 local business owners/professionals on their appearance, the thoughtfulness of their answers, confidence, tone, etc.

SPHS District had four bronze medal winners (AJ Mellen, Alexis Hutchins, Najma Abdi, and Janaea Williams), one silver medal winner (Paige Robb), and one gold medal winner (Matt Johnson) who had the third highest score out of the whole competition!

Saint Peter/Le Sueur-Henderson’s adapted bowling team had an outstanding showing at the recent state tournament qualifier, held at the Wow Zone in Mankato on May 9.

   SPHS students received a rousing send off before 
   heading to the Wow Zone in Mankato for their annual
   state qualifying tournament on May 9.

The Strike Force had 11 of their 17 bowlers competing at the state qualifier earn trips to the Minnesota State Adapted Bowling Tournament, which is set for Friday, May 17, at Bowlero in  Brooklyn Park. Singles starts at 9 a.m. with doubles action taking place at 1 p.m.

“The state qualifier tournament was great,” Kris Voeltz, Saint Peter/LSH coach, said. “Mason (Doherty) bowled a 155, which is his season high score. Emma (Soderlund) bowled a season high score in the singles competition and then beat that score in the doubles. All of the kids were focused and wanted to do their best.”

SPHS FFA students have good showing at State Convention

All of our state-bound FFA CDE (Career Development Event) teams placed well at the 90th State FFA Convention held in St. Paul, on April 28-30. (These CDE students represented Saint Peter High School’s South Central Agri-Science Academy’s FFA chapter.)

To kick off the convention, Jaxson Witty and Zac Spangenberg were selected to attend a pre convention session held specifically for members who are interested in pursuing a career in Ag. Education.

The horse team members received one gold, two silver and a bronze award. The milk quality team received one silver and two bronze awards.The meat judging team received three silver and one bronze award.The soils team received one gold and three silver awards. Sean Miller placed fifth out of 155 people, in the soil judging competition. The Ag Mechanics team received one gold, one silver, and two bronze awards. Mitch Pettis placed eighth out of 117 people, in the Ag Mechanics competition.

Our chapter received a sixth place Gold National Chapter Award and a second place Model of Innovation award.

Michael Moline, Leif Annexstand and Matthias Annexstad received their State FFA Degree. In order to receive a State Degree a student must meet nine qualifications. Just to name a few, a student must have completed the equivalent of at least two years (360 hours) of school instruction in agricultural education and have earned and productively invested at least $2,000 or worked at least 600 hours in excess of scheduled class time. They also must have participated in at least 25 hours of community service and must be an active FFA member for at least two years (24 months).

In addition to earning his state degree, Michael Moline was also introduced on stage as our 2019-20 Region 7 FFA President.

Two members from our chapter also brought a 1936 Farmall F20 that was restored for the National FFA Chevron Restoration Project. The tractor was restored by Cole Deegan and Mitch Pettis. It was the only tractor on display throughout State Convention.

While in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area, our chapter members were able to tour Mississippi Mushroom, an urban agricultural company, and the Bell Museum.
