SPHS Outdoor Ed students take part in curling

Students in Keith Hanson's Outdoor Education class at Saint Peter High School had the first-hand opportunity to learn about the winter sport of curling. The class traveled to the Heather Curling Club in Mapleton on Wednesday afternoon to partake in a sport made popular via the Winter Olympics.

Outdoor Education is a physical education elective class available to juniors and seniors at SPHS, according to Mr. Hanson.

“This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn a variety of outdoor recreational skills,” Hanson said. “Activities may include and are not limited to: canoeing, kayaking, archery, rock climbing, map and compass reading (orienteering), GPS usage, trap shooting, cross country skiing, disc golf, basic camping skills, outdoor cooking, snow shoeing, ice fishing, and ropes challenge course.

“Field trips (like the one to the Heather Curling Club) are scheduled to allow students to practice and implement skills learned.”
