SPHS model rocket launch

(Above) The second and larger of the two model rockets launched by Logan Pherson and  Isam Ibrahim blasts off in front of a large crowd outside the SPHS commons area on Wednesday afternoon.

Two SPHS sophomores and model rocket enthusiasts, Isam Ibrahim and Logan Pherson, launched two model rockets at the end of the school day today (Wednesday) much to the amazement and delight of the large crowd that gathered outside the commons area to take in the action.

Ibrahim and Pherson, who started the new Aerospace Club at SPHS earlier this school year, are looking to generate interest in the club with plans to also raise funds for future projects. They both felt a public launch was a great way to accomplish that, and judging by the local media coverage it attracted and the cheers from the appreciative crowd, it was a huge success!

The bigger of the two rockets that the duo launched, according to Ibrahim and Pherson, was a mid-power F-class rocket that could go from 2,000 to 3,000 feet in the air, and even higher if the conditions were right. Anything higher than an F-class rocket would need special clearance and a permit, but both rockets they launched were well under that threshold.
