Palmer with Mrs. Schultz's class

This spring, South Elementary students, staff, and families joined together to support a cause close to our hearts: raising money for Type 1 Diabetes research in honor of one of our own students—Palmer Klein.

Palmer is a bright, kind-hearted first grader at South in Mrs. Schultz's class who lives with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Despite the daily challenges, Palmer shows resilience, courage, and STAR Pride in everything he does.

To show our support for Palmer and others like him, we launched a “Pennies for Palmer’s Pack” fundraiser from April 28 to May 2, with all proceeds going to Palmer’s Pack—a team of family and friends participating in the Breakthrough T1D Walk in the Twin Cities. This walk raises critical funds for research, with the hope of one day finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

Our whole South community can take pride in knowing they made a real difference. Together, we raised an incredible $1,517.85!

Even more importantly, our students learned what T1D is, how it impacts individuals and families, and how they can help others through kindness, generosity, and action. We are so proud of our school community and honored to support Palmer and his family in this journey.

Way to go, South!
