Fourth graders in Mrs. Nixon's class created a wax museum towards the end of the school year as a culmination to a unit on writing biographies. Each student chose a person from history or a current influence and researched the person. After writing a biography, the students wrote a speech from a first-person perspective that shared important aspects and facts of their lives and how they impacted the world. Students also created posters to highlight the important facts about their person.
On May 23rd, the students created a wax museum in the library at North Elementary. Students dressed up as the person they learned about. They made a "button" and had a container to collect coins next to them. Second and third grade students were invited to come to the wax museum. The fourth graders were statues until a student pushed the bottom or put coins in their container and then they read their speech from the first-person perspective. After their speech they returned to being a statue until the next person pushed their button. Parents were invited to come to the wax museum at the end of the day. The money that was collected will be given to the St. Peter Food Shelf.
This activity focused on the Minnesota State Standard of identifying individuals who have had an impact on world history and how the actions of these individuals have helped shape the world around them and the world today.
