Students at Saint Peter High School have been working hard to build the 32nd house for Habitat for Humanity of South Central Minnesota. SPHS has been involved with Habitat for Humanity for over three decades, and students are under the guidance of SPHS instructor Scott Robinson during this project.
The students are currently framing the floor and exterior walls, and they have hopes to finish the roof by winter break. Through this project and class, students get hands-on experience with forming and pouring a foundation, framing the house, installing windows and doors, and applying the exterior finishes, in addition to completing OSHA-10 training and investigating different jobs within the construction industry.
“The year-long class really allows students to work in all of the conditions Minnesota has to offer," Robinson said. "This means they get first-hand experience doing the jobs in real-world conditions, while solving real-world problems. I enjoy talking to the students as they make decisions about what they want to do.”
