Members of Michelle Javen’s Adulting 101 class at SPHS recently partook in mock interviews with various staff volunteers and special guest Mariah Jones, an HR Manager from Hewitt Docks. Jones spoke with students about what she looks for when hiring, common red flags in interviews and applications, and shared job opportunities available to students.
Her insight helped students better understand real employer expectations and how to present themselves professionally. This experience gave students practical, real-world feedback and encouraged many of them to take the next steps in applying for jobs.
Adulting 101 is a class offered to all students at SPHS, but is specifically geared towards juniors and seniors as they begin preparing more directly for life after high school. Students in Adulting 101 build practical, real-world skills that prepare them for life after high school, with a focus on developing confidence and independence as they transition into adulthood.
The course covers career planning, job readiness, and financial literacy, along with hands-on skills like cooking, cleaning, laundry, and sewing. Students are currently completing a service project by hand-sewing items to donate to Enchanted Makeovers. The class also explores relationships, communication, and health and wellness to support well-rounded decision-making.
“My favorite part of teaching this class has been watching students gain confidence as they try new skills and step outside of their comfort zones. Whether it’s practicing interviews, cooking for the first time, or learning to sew, it’s rewarding to see them realize they are capable and take pride in their work, especially when they know their projects can positively impact others.” Javens said.
She also talked about how valuable the interviewing experience was for her students. Many of them felt nervous, but through their hard work, preparation, and professionalism, they were able to present themselves well and did a great job of practicing their communication skills.
