World Culture Joy Day poster

Saint Peter High School is hosting World Culture Joy Day on Friday, April 17, during the middle two blocks of classes. SPHS’s Social Justice Club is taking the lead on this event with school staff members Vero Castillo-Clark, Jen Maldonado, Jean Liou, and Charmayne Klah helping out. 

Focus for the day will be on students from our Asian/South Pacific, Latino/Hispanic, Indigenous, and Somali/East African communities. Activities will take place in the four pods in the academic wing. Here are some of the student leaders and activities being planned for the World Culture Joy Day event:

Asian/South Pacific - Zi Yue, Marlowe Smith, and Masazumi Shindo

  • Chinese New Years 

    • Games (red packet)

    • Bubble (Boba) tea during lunch (courtesy of Mochi Mochi, Mankato)

  • Japanese - day in the life of a high school student

    • School uniform

    • School trips

    • School schedule


Somali/East African (Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya) - Khadra Jimale & Shahad Said

  • Food tasting

  • Henna (girls only)

  • Face painting (boys)

  • Dance demonstrations


Hispanic/Latino - Jocelyn Gutierrez & Cristina Ralios

  • Activity upon entering

  • Color coded guide

  • Trivia contest on Latino/Hispanic culture (Kahoot)

  • True/False game on stereotypes 

  • Dialect presentation

  • Classical musical chairs (Latin music)

  • Possible visit by a clown (Jocelyn’s Dad)


Indigenous - Addy Maxfield & Shayla Secatero

  • Fashion Show

    • Designed and sewn together by students

  • Storytelling (using the tipi that was painted by NAPAC members)

  • Lacrosse (traditional sport) 

    • Demonstration outside if weather cooperates

  • Traditional clothing

    • Classroom displays and slideshow

  • Fry breads 

    • Made by some of the students’ family members and other community members
