North Elementary Wax Museum

North Elementary fourth graders took part in the second annual Wax Museum event on Friday, May 22. The students worked hard the previous few weeks to research a person of historical significance. Then they took that information and turned it into a biography, poster board, and a speech. Mrs. Nixon’s class first did this activity last school year and it was such a big success that this year all six fourth-grade classrooms got involved.

The unit concluded that Friday afternoon as students dressed up as the person they researched and put their poster boards on display. Family members were then invited to attend and a large crowd attended the event. The second and third graders were also invited to attend and each was assigned a specific time and room to visit.

A freewill offering was taken during the Wax Museum event and $438.34 was collected, which was donated to the St. Peter Area Food Shelf.

Those attending the event were invited to walk up to each person, who was to be “frozen like a statue,” and press their handmade button. Once the button was pressed, the fourth-grade presenter came to life, read their speech, and then froze again until someone else pressed their button. Each room had about 25 students, giving attendees a chance to learn about several historical figures!

This activity focused on the Minnesota State Standard of identifying individuals who have had an impact on world history and how the actions of these individuals have helped shape the world around them and the world today.
