SPHS One Act Play gears up for contests

Saint Peter High School’s Theater Department has chosen “Goosed!” by Hillary DePiano as this year’s One Act Play production, and the cast was selected after the audition process was completed in late November 2022.

A free public performance is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, at the SPHS Performing Arts Center (PAC), and the Saints will also host the non-competitive Big South One Act Play Festival during the school day on Jan 23, 2023, at the PAC. The Big South event is not open to the public.

Saint Peter High School will host this year’s Section 2AA, Subsection A Contest on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023, at the PAC. In addition to SPHS, other schools competing will be Jordan, New Prague, Hutchinson, and Orono. The Section 2AA, Subsection A Contest will be open to the public with ticketing info TBD. The top three at the Subsection A event advance to the Section 2AA Contest on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, in Chanhassen High School. The top play at the Section 2AA Contest advances to state on Thursday, Feb. 9, at the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium on the campus of St. Catherine University (St. Paul).

Jason Toupence and Amanda Blue are co-directors for this year’s SPHS One Act Play, while Wesley Toupence is the student director, and CeeJay King is the lighting director.

“Goosed!” is a modern adaptation of the fairy tale, “The Goose,” by Giambattista Basile (The Tale of Tales). According to Hillary DiPiano’s website, the following is a description of Goosed – “When two poor sisters save a goose from the butcher, the animal is so grateful it produces them piles of gold. But when their greedy neighbors want the treasure for themselves, they discover this goose isn’t so easily cooked. From a bloodthirsty fowl with a golden stool to a careless prince who gets it in the end, soon everyone is feeling the pinch. With a large cast, majority female roles, lots of physical comedy, and room for improvisation, Goosed is an Italian fairy tale in the classic slapstick tradition that’s a butt-load of fun for all ages to watch and perform.
