SPHS student wins book award
SPHS hosts fashion show! Last night Saint Peter High School students filled Minnesota Square Park with dancing, music, beautiful clothing, and lots of smiles and laughter as we hosted our first-ever Somali Fashion Show! Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community for the Muslim religion, happened to fall at the same time as the SPHS prom. Unfortunately, due to the customs of Ramadan, students were unable to attend. After discussing their disappointment with SPHS English Language Learner teacher, Thomas Bollum, together they came up with a plan. This fashion show was to give students the excitement of getting dressed up and celebrating each other, similar to the Grand March. What a celebration it was!! The participants showed traditional dresses from their culture that are appropriate to wear to weddings, everyday dress for school, and special occasions. Mr. Bollum, the emcee for the evening, welcomed each participant in true fashion show format. There was also traditional dancing, singing and lots of music! Many families and students attended, as well as Saint Peter staff that came to show their support. It was such a success plans are already in the works to do it again next year!

STATE CHAMPS! St. Peter’s boys track team took home first-place honors in the team competition today at the Minnesota State Class AA Track & Field Meet at St. Michael-Albertville High School! The Saints tallied 44 team points to edge runner-up Spectrum by four points and third-place finisher Jordan by five points. It was the first-ever state team title in boys track for the Saints and the first state team championship for Saints’ athletics since the girls track team took home top honors in 2011. Leading the way to the team title was sophomore Corbin Herron who surprised the field in the 110-meter high hurdles as he earned state champion honors himself with a time of 14.97, just four-one hundreths of a second faster than Cole Schmidt of Delano. Senior Brogan Hanson capped his amazing season with a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.18 to earn some valuable team points. The 4x200 relay team of Vinny Guappone, Kole Guth, Derek Guth and Hanson earned silver medals as they crossed the finish line in a clocking of 1:29.51, a season best for that speedy foursome. Senior Kole Guth earned a fourth-place medal in the boys’ pole vault competition by clearing a personal-best height of 13’6”, while freshman sensation Luke Banks clinched the team title for the Saints as he matched Guth’s fourth-place finish in the discus with a toss of 152’8”. Not to be outdone, senior Cadence Selzler-Campion capped her outstanding prep career with a personal-best heave of 35’4.25” in the girls shot, good enough for seventh place and a visit to the medal stand in the girls competition. Senior Katie Gurrola placed 12th in the girls’ discus the previous day to cap the Saints’ state competitors. Congrats to the Saints’ boys & girls track & field coaches as well who helped guide this talented group of athletes all season long! They include head coaches Keith Hanson and Jeff Portugue along with boys & girls assistant coaches Bill Stuewe, Marc Bachman, George Schoenborn, Corey Wiebusch, Alex Weis, and Wallace Michels. Special thanks for McKenzie Weis for providing the great photos!
